A local glazier has stepped in to fix a mobile sauna for free after vandals broke its windows.
The Rock Box Sauna was targeted at the beginning of September when it was positioned at Cobo. A break-in was attempted which caused damage to both the wooden doors, and leaving the window looking out onto the bay cracked and damaged.
‘It was really disappointing as the window is a big part of the experience as guests look straight out to the ocean while they relax,’ said Sandy Lawson, the sauna’s owner.
‘I emailed a few companies for quotes to replace the glass as the cost would not be covered by my insurance excess, and then out of the blue I received a call from Nigel Gale at Guernsey Glazing.
‘He had seen what had happened and wanted to replace the damaged window free of charge as a goodwill gesture because he said he loves seeing new small businesses thrive in Guernsey. I was genuinely stunned in the best possible way.
‘It fills my soul with happiness that there are still people in the world who choose kindness every day.’
Mr Lawson did not realise that the two men had spoken in the past, as Mr Gale and his wife are regular sea swimmers who often walked past the sauna on their way to the sea, though they have never used the sauna.
‘I saw in the Press that the sauna been vandalised,’ said Mr Gale.
‘I thought we should repair it free of charge as a gesture because it’s a small local business, and for us it was not a huge deal, just supplying and fitting a piece of glass.’
He said he might well now use the sauna.
‘I am actually really tempted, especially as we live literally just around the corner,’ he said.
‘We’ll probably give it a go over the winter, for sure.’
Mr Lawson said: ‘He doesn’t know it yet, but I’m about to get him in – basically just to say thank you.’
The sauna moves between Cobo and Vazon every six months and is now stationed near Vistas Cafe at Vazon.
Mr Lawson runs the sauna in his spare time, having moved to the island two years ago to take up a teaching position at The Ladies’ College.
Living on the west coast, he thought he saw a need for a sauna to support the sea swimmers and decided to step in, but his basic motivation was that he loves taking a sauna himself.
‘The benefits are amazing, it helps with sleep, its good for your cardiovascular system,’ he said. ‘You don’t even have to go swimming. You can just have a sauna. I like sea swimming, but I like saunas more.’
The sauna opened in February, just after a similar venture opened at the bathing pools, but the two operators are unrelated.
‘I think we just saw the same need at the same time,’ said Mr Lawson. ‘It’s been fantastic welcoming such a mix of people, from families sharing a session with their children, to hen-dos, family reunions, pre-wedding sauna parties and plenty of visitors and tourists, alongside our regulars who come and share their stories.’
