TL;DR
- The US government alleges that DJI products can send sensitive data to the Chinese government.
- The NDAA requires an audit of DJI by December 23; failure to do so will result in an automatic ban.
- If the ban is implemented, DJI products will no longer be sold, and app and software updates will be discontinued.
Due to national security concerns from the US, you may not be able to get a DJI Mic 3 this Christmas. The US government alleges that DJI products could be used to send sensitive data to the Chinese government. This is based on perceived risk to national security rather than current evidence. To avoid a potential ban, the NDAA requires an audit of DJI by December 23. Otherwise, no US retailer will be able to sell any DJI products. This includes products that were on the shelves the day prior.
What does this mean if you already own or are considering buying a DJI mic during Black Friday sales? While the potential ban primarily targets DJI drones, it also affects wireless microphones and cameras. All DJI products will no longer be available for sale, and you will also lose access to software support if you’re in the US.
If you already own a DJI product, such as the DJI Mic 3, it won’t be illegal if the ban goes through. However, you won’t be able to update them, as you won’t have access to the software. This can also be a problem if there are rule changes that restrict the frequencies the wireless mics can use. You will also lose the ability to download the DJI Mimo app. This means there won’t be any way to obtain firmware updates or bug fixes. Now, there are alternative methods, such as sideloading on Android, but you will lose access if you’re using an iPhone.
This will likely mean that many people will hold off on buying a DJI mic, even with the Black Friday sales underway. Let us know in the poll below whether you’re still considering DJI mics or will look to alternatives, such as the Rode wireless microphone systems.
Does the potential ban affect your decision to buy a DJI product?
